Description

A 1:2500 scale, photogrammetric survey was carried out by the RCHME Air Photography Unit between 30th April 1996 and 7th May 1996 in the vicinity of a ring ditch at Ringstead, East Northamptonshire, SP 9949 7381. The survey was carried out at the request of Anglian Water who were about to start laying a pipeline and therefore required an accurate transcription of the site so that an alternative route could be designed. Rectification of the aerial photographs was undertaken using the AERIAL 4.2 software published by the University of Bradford which uses plane transformation techniques generally offering metrical precision in the order of +/- 2m at 1:2500 scale. During the course of the survey, three photogrammetic plots were prepared and residual errors recorded were no greater than +/- 1m. The ring ditch is centred at SP 9949 7381, 250m north of Brick Kiln Lane, the size and shape of the feature suggests that it is likely to be the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow. As a result of this survey, one Monument record was updated (SP 97 SE 52). The archive relating to this survey is held at the NMRC (Collection UID 1047392) and contains the original ink plot and a copy of the report.
