Description

In May 2023, Archaeology Wales Ltd conducted an archaeological excavation on the remains of a glasshouse located within the Walled Garden on the Althorp Estate. The excavation revealed well-preserved foundations and subterranean structures of the glasshouse, including earlier phases of construction and later additions. Ancillary structures were recorded along the exterior of the north-western wall of the glasshouse, which would have likely accommodated potting sheds, tool stores and worker rest rooms. The excavation uncovered artefacts. Most notably, a carved stone displaying part of the Spencer Crest dating to the 17th century was found.
