Description
In 2022 - 2023, Headland Archaeology were commissioned to undertake excavation works in advance of phase one of high speed two. During the previous works that were conducted in 2021-2022, remains of a large and complex iron age and Romano-British settlement were identified. The 2022 - 2023 works focused on investigation of possible riverside structures and further remains at risk of damage or destruction by works related to the construction of a permanent culvert. The works confirmed the absence of a Roman causeway or bridge running over the Spinney with no associated wooden or stone structures present. The identified features comprised a series of Roman structures surfaces and cut features representing the southern outskirts of the Blackgrounds Roman settlement.
