Description

Oxford Archaeology undertook an archaeological trial trench evaluation on 6.8ha of agricultural land at Wantage Farm, Moulton, in advance of a proposed development. 27 evaluation trenches were excavated, with an extension added to Trench 14 to investigate a possible segmented boundary identified by geophysical survey. Archaeological remains were recorded in Trenches 1, 5, 7, 8, 14, 24 and 25, comprising pits, ditches, postholes and probable plough furrows. The principal archaeological evidence was a middle Iron Age pit containing substantial pottery, fired clay, burnt stone, worked flint and a probable loomweight or spindle whorl. A long undated boundary, previously identified by geophysical survey, was confirmed across several trenches.
