Description

During 1967-69 housing estate works destroyed the site of the former manor. Excavation of selected areas showed that the earliest occupation was late Saxon. Post holes and sleeper-beam trenches of rectangular huts were associated with an extensive area of pits, ditches and iron-working forge hearths. Later groups of pottery associated with manorial buildings were recovered from ditches of the 12th and 13th centuries.
