Description

In June 2026, Thames Valley Archaeological Services East Midlands undertook an archaeological watching brief during repairs to five sections of the churchyard retaining wall at St Mary's Church, Grendon. The works involved the dismantling and rebuilding of unstable sections of the limestone retaining wall. No archaeological features, grave cuts, articulated burials, disarticulated human remains, or archaeological finds were identified. Deposits exposed behind the wall consisted of loose limestone rubble interpreted as relating to restoration works undertaken at the church in 1848. Several reused gravestones were recorded within the fabric of the wall, principally in Areas A1, A2 and A5
