Description

{3} A watching brief was undertaken during an improvement scheme on the A6116 road E of Stanion village. The Roman site first recorded in the 19th century was rediscovered and contained evidence of ironworking. Large quarry pits had been dug into an outcrop of Northampton Sand Ironstone and ore was presumably smelted nearby. The pits had been backfilled with slag, mortar and domestic refuse, including pottery of the late 1st and 2nd centuries. No firm evidence was obtained of the Roman roads which were thought to cross the area. A detailed report is available in the Northamptonshire Archaeological Archive and a catalogue of the pottery will be published in due course.
