Description

{1} The main area of the watching brief was reduced by c0.2-0.4m across the entire area and backfilled with imported materials. The excavation only exposed modern deposits. Brick rubble at the north-east corner of the site may indicate the position of a former cellar. Pile boreholes for the footings of the new building were too narrow to be of value in determining the underlying stratigraphy. The service trench excavated along the northern boundary of St Giles Churchyard was too narrow for detailed observations but it appeared to be cutting through disturbed soils for most of its length- these are likely to relate to previous quarrying.
