Description
{1} Trial trenches both parallel with Watling Street and at right-angles to it confirmed the existence of Roman features behind the former frontage. Roman remains were uncovered immediately below the topsoil at a depth of up to c 0.5m. Their upper levels had been so truncated by succeeding agriculture, however, that the best survival occurred on the ridges between the furrows of later cultivation. The densest concentration lay closest to the road.
