Description
{1} Trial trenches in 1965 by members of the Thrapston Historical Society and Upper Nene Archaeological Society on land which had yielded surface indications of Roman British occupation and which was to be used for a road widening scheme produced pottery, coins and brooches but no structural remains which would be in danger of destruction. A drainage trench revealed a section of the Huntingdon-Leicester Roman road (Route 57a) approximately 3 ft. below ground level. The road had a limestone core about 3 in. thick and 17 ft. wide. Above this was up to 9 in of solid gravel 21 ft wide, with the overlap of 4 in. on one side. It has been suggested that this area was the crossing point of two Roman roads, but nothing was seen of the Irchester-Water Newton road (Route 570).
