Description

{1} An archaeological watching brief was carried out during the installation of a new water supply through the churchyard to the vestry of St James' Church. The church and churchyard are situated to the east side of Castle Hill, an early medieval ringwork. Observation was maintained throughout the excavation of the trench which ran from the west tower doorway. The trench was had excavated (c450mm wide and up to 750mm deep). A small quantity of human skeletal was recovered. Brick-lined drains were observed as well as an electrical cable trench, which had destroyed any archaeological levels associated with the earthwork to the west.
