Description

Evaluation trenches were dug by D A Jackson in April 1986 and a watching brief maintained and further trenches excavated by M Shaw in October-December 1986 during construction of the A43 Towcester Bypass where it meets the AS (Watling Street). Further information was provided by C and P Woodfield who collected other finds. [Some confusion as to who excavated which trenches.] Ditches were uncovered running parallel to and at a distance of 25m, 45m and 65m to the NNE of Watling Street. Further ditches ran at right angle to the road. No definite buildings but gravel surfaces, possible foundation trenches and postholes and large quantity of finds. Pottery dated from late 1st to 4th centuries AD.
