ENN6572 - Camp Hill road works, 1976 (Excavation)

[1} Roman settlement comprising ditches and pits containing 1st century AD pottery were recorded during road construction. {2} Compaction of the surface by box-scrapers coupled with hot dry weather made observation difficult for much of the time. At the Rothersthorpe Road end of the works there were a series of narrow linear features, but there were no finds; possibly natural in origin. Between SP73455875 and SP 73505890 a series of pits was observed. Several were investigated and all contained Iron Age/Belgic pottery. {3} Hunsbury Hill Farm: Pits and ditches cut by topsoil stripping for the new road- part of Danes Camp Way. Soil removed to a depth of over 1m, edges graded. Many pits destroyed. Limited rescue excavation over several days. Potsherds of Belgic type.
