Description
A trial trench, aligned north-south, 11m long and up to 2.5m deep was cut by machine. Below the modern overburden, which varied in depth between 0.9m and 1.7m, a khaki silty clay layer was discovered which was up to 2.4m deep. Below this was a bright brown silty clay (2.3-2.5m) and then a light green clay. The light green clay may be the upper lias clay, the two layers above appeared to be alluvial in character.
