Description

{1} Trial excavations were undertaken immediately north of St Giles' churchyard in July 1979. Trench 1, 9.5m long was dug by machine to a depth of 2.8m bgl at which point natural had not been reached. Trench 2 measured c3mx2m and at a depth of 1.4m natural had not been reached. Deposits in both trenches appeared to be dumped layers. The evidence is in keeping with a large quarry at least 50m north-south x 25m east-west. UAD checked 09.10.95; No records within NDC SMR (M289); NAR antiquity number 1.0, 65.0.
