Description
{1} In 1970 certain houses between Bearward Street and Silver Street were demolished prior to redevelopment. The opportunity was taken to attempt to locate the line of the Saxon defences. A single 22m or 26m [sources differ] trench running at right angles to the axis of the streets was excavated. The trench was excavated to a depth of 5m and modern disturbances went down to a depth of 2m. Evidence suggests a ditch 13m wide and 3.8m deep filled in during the 12th-13th century
