Description

{1} A bovine skull as found in the spoil by JW from a palaeochannel during excavation of the 'Washlands'. A subsequent site visit in July by JW and GEO found waterlogged wood from the top of a grey clay deposit and from the top of a black deposit. This is exposed for the width of the new channel cutting (c10m) and is edged by grey gravel. Both are overlain by 1m of grey clay under 1m orange/grey mottled clay and 1m orange sandy clay; ie black starts at depth of 3m or thereabouts. GEO saw the east of the black deposit (the former river Nene). Could be recent (ie pre Nene Valley Way) course. [Sketch of the skull and a piece of tusk on reverse of card- 23/11/1977 piece of tusk reported- found on 'North Bauk' ie same area as P91 but depth and type of deposit unknown. Soil adhering to tusk on collection was smelly blue-grey clay. One end was won around edge and hollow and other end was broken]
