Description

{1} Cursory examination of two fields around the barn at SP 87656222 produced 5 pagan/middle Saxon sherds. In Summer 1976 careful observation of stripping of soil to provide an access road for gravel extraction led to the identification of a number of pagan/Middle Saxon features: shallow scoops with traces of charcoal, scraps of bone, and a few sherds; two shallow ditches contained a few sherds including a single decorated (?) pagan sherd. One deeper feature on the mound of a large round barrow contained a few (?) human bones in addition to Saxon sherds
