Summary

What appears to be an early (if much-altered) example of a single-storey boot and shoe factory, built by 1896, on the west side of Lawton Road. The east elevation is formed by a two storeyed block with a very wide gable. This represents an early 20th century rebuilding - on the original footprint - of the east end of the factory. It has a large windows with blue brick sills and concrete lintels, a central entrance and a roof of corrugated asbestos sheeting. Behind this there appear to be two single-storeyed north-lit ranges dating from circa 1895; these remain partly slate roofed. The shoe factory may have been engulfed (along with the site in Allen Road) by an engineering works as early as 1930. Gabled brick ranges to the north are probably associated with the engineering works rather than the shoe factory. Now demolished.
