Building record 7203/70/1 - Boot and shoe factory, 21 Harborough Road

(?Clarke Bros., Harry Jaques, ?Horace Wright, ?Leather Components Ltd.) A shoe factory probably dating from the late 1880s occupies a deep plot on the north side of Harborough Road. It originally consisted of a three-storeyed street range with a seven bay south front, to the rear of which there was a small projection, possibly a privy tower. The rear elevation is mostly obscured by later additions. Access to the yard is via a wide opening corresponding to the easternmost two window bays; on the first floor the corresponding position is occupied by a taking-in doorway retaining a crane. Probably during the early 20th century the factory was considerably extended by the addition of a ten-bay rear range, replacing or enfolding earlier rear projections.
