Building record 7203/76/1 - Building Abutting Wentworth Road

Summary

Possible Boot & Shoe Factory/Builder's Yard (Thomas Tobiah Clarke, T.Swindell & Sons). This building, not certainly identified as having leather trades origins, may have been part of the works belonging to Thomas Clarke in 1906, or may have formed an outbuilding to one of the several shoe factories on Moor Road, to the south. It is built as right angles to Wentworth Road, which the north gable overlooks. Latterly, perhaps as early as the 1940s, it was used by T Swindell and Sons, builders and coal merchants, and funeral directors, as indicated by the a sign on a later building to the south-east. This may indicate a further possible origin, arguably more consistant with the range of openings in the east elevation. The much-altered building has two storeys and seven bays. It is plainly built, with segmental-headed openings on the ground floor and in the north gable, and a mixture of square-headed windows, and two taking-in doorways on the east elevation at first-floor level. The windows have blue brick sills and the roof has a clay cresting. The first-floor north window retains a cast-iron frame, but many openings have been altered.
