St Crispin's Factory, Sackville Street
St Crispins factory formed in 1891 when 10 men left another factory in Raunds after objecting to long hours and disagreeable working conditions. Bought a shop and made footwear by hand, joined the Co-operative Society and built a factory. In 1913 'St Crispin Productive Footwear Society' was formed; every member of the Board of Managers was a factory employee. All who worked there had to contribute between ,20 and ,200 when they started. By 1939 they were producing ,1,500 worth of goods per week for government contract work. The building was burnt down in 1945. Modern housing stands on the site. (1)
