Full Description

{1} Shown on early maps but now built over.

{2} Archaeological observation of the construction of a building on Holmes Road was undertaken. The general stratigraphic sequence observed in the excavated area comprised redeposited clay and limestone, containing 17th- or 18th-century brick and tile, over 0.5m thick. Natural substrate was not reached. The redeposited clay and limestone mixed with building materials is likely to represent backfill of the quarrying pit, with a depth greater than 0.5m. The pit, as shown on early maps, did not extend this far south suggesting it was larger than actually recorded.
