Full Description

{1}Phipps Brewery
Opened in 1801.By 1817 he had acquired larger premises in Bridge Street; which to a large extent took over from the Towcester site. The Towcester site was re-developed in 1874 on a site off Watling Street East. See notes for business history. The brewery employed 70 men at the height of production. Brewing ceased in Towcester after a fire in 1901. In 1938 the site was bought and part of the old buildings were used for the manufacture of cattle cake etc. The structures have now all been demolished and Malthouse Court stands on the site. The only building to remain is the fire engine building associated with the site. Film 3, photo 18. There is a stone building of 17th century origin in front of the original brewery building it is known as 'Old Brewery House' - it is possible that it was linked with the business during its operation. It is a listed building. Film 3, photo 19.
