Full Description

{1} Factory, Alexandra Street. Red brick factory located to the rear of Alexandra Street. Originally located behind and physically adjoined to a domestic house. The house has now gone. The original two storey, four bay structure was erected prior to 1900 and the building was further extended by 1926. The building was probably utilised by either the boot and shoe or the clothing trade and is now in use by 'Langham Industrial Controls Ltd'.

{2} This boot and shoe factory originated shortly before 1899 as a modest two-storeyed building at the rear of a small house. The 1899 OS map shows the house consisting of a main and a rear range. It was replaced before 1970 on map evidence, but a fragment may survive in the present long flat-roofed range fronting the plot, and scars for the rear range (which was two-storeyed throughout) are visible on both the factory and the party wall with the adjacent property to the south. Abutting the rear range, and possibly communicating with it, the factory occupied the width of two house-plots minus a narrow passage on the north side. The factory consists of four bays. It has segmental-headed windows with blue brick sills and iron window frames. There is a stack on the north gable. Between 1899 and 1924 (again on map evidence), the factory was considerably extended to the rear. The rebuilding of the house and rear range, together with further minor alterations, are apparent on the 1970 OS map.
