Full Description

Boot Factory, Albert Street
Large boot factory on end of Albert Street has been demolished and replaced with modern flats. May have been Kettering Boot and Shoe Manufacturing Company Limited - listed in Kelly's Trade Directory of 1894. (1)
{2} The factory or warehouse is of two construction and is joined by a linking passage to a terraced house on Victoria Street. The building has a five window range on the south side, but no openings on the north side. A newspaper report (Kettering Evening Telegraph 16/11/00) indicates that it was owned by TW Bailey (Merchants). The firm began as a boot making and repair business, but later bcame a wholesale department for the provision of leather to the shoe trade. There was direct access between the house and the warehouse/factory with the bedroom door leading straight into the packing room. It was not possible to ascertain whether there was access at ground floor level as the area is now blocked. There is evidence for a chimney and blocked fire place on the west wall.
The whole site has been used most recently as an auction house and has been completely re-arranged inside. There is, however, an old press which appears to remain in situ on the first floor. The press was originally hand operated, but was later mechanically driven.
