Full Description

Saddington and Robinson Bros Wholesale Boot and Shoe Manufacturers, Dalkeith Place
There was a large industrial building in this location which has since been demolished, possibly a boot and shoe manufactury. (1)

{2} Formerly W. H. Staynes & Smith, leather manufacturers and merchants, in this location by 1893. Replaced in the 1920s by Standard Engineering Co, boot and shoe machinery and knife manufacturers, and subsequently by other industrial users. The two-storeyed frontage building on Dalkeith Place has been considerably altered in recent years for use as a public house. Only part of the extensive rear range survives.
The brick building has a five bay west elevation, the end bays projecting beneath triangular pediments. According to a view published in 1916 there was an arched yard entrance in the north projecting bay, while the principal entrance was in the projecting bay at the opposite end. At the southern end there is a canted corner and the building proceeds irregularly to the rear, following the line of an unnamed yard. A two storey warehouse building fronting onto British Lane is the principle remnant of a once extensive rear range.

{4} The two-storey rear range is listed as Edward Tailby, boot and shoe heels, c1924.
