Monument record 7198/46 - Montagu Works, Wellington Road / Montagu Street

Please read our .

Summary

A very large three storey boot and shoe factory called the Montagu Works, was built in 1887 on the corner of Montagu Street and Wellington Street. Three main ranges are grouped around a rear yard. The principal elevations southwards onto Montagu Street and westwards onto Wellington Street, form a symmetrical composition centred on the elaborate corner block, this has a single narrow bay to each street and a canted entrance bay on the corner. Extending along each frontage there are similar ranges of seven pier and panel bays, the end bays in each case rising to gables. The eastern half of the Montagu Street range is basemented, and on the northwards return (parallel to but set back from, Tresham Street) this level is expressed as a full storey.
