Full Description
{1} Fredrick Wallis introduced the use of the sewing machine for manufacturing to the town in 1856. In 1864 the old silk mill in School Lane was burnt down and a new factory was built equipped with the latest sewing machines. This building was listed in Kelly's Trade Directory of 1894 and was probably one of the large industrial builidngs shown on early OS maps which have since been demolished. In 1871 the firm had opened branch factories at Burton Latimer, Rothwell, Brigstock and Cotingham. By 1906 the firm had 6 outlying factories and was employing 1,000 workers.
