{2} The Advance Works occupies a large corner site, with its principal front facing York Road to the west, and a return elevation to Russell Street on the north. It was built in 1897 for Jeffrey & Timson, wholesale shoe manufacturers, and operated from 1908 by the successor partnership of Timson, Bird & Smith, who before 1916 built two eastwards extensions along Russell Street. As originally built the factory consisted of an entrance and office range on York Road and single-storeyed north-lit sheds to the rear, with a north elevation to Russell Street. The walls are of dark red brick with a blue brick band at plinth level, and incorporate stone dressings, including sills, door surrounds, kneelers, copings and pediments. Later phases are built in a pinkish-red brick, with bands of blue and red brick, concrete sills and steel or cast-iron window frames. Two main phases can be distinguished, both completed by 1912.
