Full Description

{1} Kettering Furnaces. Ironstone quarrying began in Kettering in 1870's. Blast furnaces were introduced to the town in 1878 by the Kettering Coal and Iron Company. The furnaces have now all been removed and the area is now an industrial estate. Local knowledge informs that modern houses are being constructed along Furnace Lane leading to the former furnaces.

{2} The ironworks operated between 1878 and 1959.

{3} These were in Rothwell Parish, on the west side of the railway about 3/4 mile north of the bridge over the A-class road between Kettering and Market Harborough (SP860802).
1878 Kettering Coal and Iron Co Ltd put first two furnaces in blast
1956 Company taken over by Stewarts and Lloyds
1959 Production ceased
There does not appear to have been a foundry at these furnaces but iron pigs, carrying the words 'Kettering Coal & Iron Co' were supplied to Graftons, Bedford for use as ballast in the cranes manufactured there. One of these is at the Hunsbury Hill site of the Northamptonshire Ironstone Railway Trust.
