Summary

These works were built by the Cransley Iron Company, formed in 1875. The furnaces were first put in blast in 1977. There were originally two furnaces but by 1880 work was started on a third and completed in 1882. Production ceased in 1957 and the furnaces demolished the following year.

Full Description

{1} Ironworks operated between 1877 & 1957.

{2} The works were situated on the north-west side of the Northampton to Kettering road (A43) about 1 1/2 miles from Kettering (SP 850 776). The blast furnaces here produced pig iron for subsequent use in foundries and forges elsewhere but in the 1885 Kelly's Directory the company was also listed under Ironfounders.

1890 New Cransley Iron Company Ltd took over the works and smelting resumed. Later came under the control of Stewarts and Lloyds Ltd
1957 Production ceased
1958 Furnaces demolished
The types of cast iron items produced here are not known
The site was later used as a scrapyard by George Cohen, Sons & Co Ltd but on cessation of their activities most of the site was cleared in 1980.

{3} Cransley Iron Works to the south of the town on Northampton Road have now gone and the area is used as a scrap metal yard.
