Summary

A single storey shoe factory on Saffron road (now demolished) that was rebuilt in 1917, according to an inscription on the frontage, on the site of an earlier shoe factory. It consisted of five northlit ranges, the western end of the northernmost terminating in a stone office frontage on Saffron Road. This had a central entrance with a keyed bolection moulded surround and an outer surround incorporating a frieze with the word 'Office' in raised letters. It was flanked by two two-light mullion and transom windows. Over the door there was a large tablet with a lugged bolection-moulded surround containing the following inscription 'A.E Wright, Founded A.D 1896, Rebuilt A.D 1917'.

Full Description

{1} Boot and Shoe Factory, Back Lane or Cemetery Lane. Boot and Shoe factory between Back Lane and College Street - original roof line for the factory shows through the modern single storey extension. Now in use by 'Combined Rubber Components Ltd'. Original factory was of red brick with an office frontage of stone. ''A.E Wright. Founded 1896 rebuilt AD 1917'. Film 3, photo 24. Film 4 photo 1-3.
