Summary

The principal entrance is in the third bay from the west, while the easternmost bay has original taking-in doorways on the upper floors. Beneath there is an original yard entrance, much altered but retaining limestone anchor blocks. In the early 20th century a large single storey lantern roofed range was built parallel to Glendon road on the south side of the site and two north-lit ranges were squeezed into the space between this and the front and rear ranges.

Full Description

{1} Stanley Works, Rushton Road. Known as the Rothwell Boot and Shoe Co in 1896, became Stanley Works in 1920s. A later sign on the building reads 'Press Knives' and in 1999 was Abishot Mouldings, engineering works. Building shows on map of 1900 and expanded by 1926, but not indicated as Boot and Shoe factory although this would clearly appear to be its function. The structure remains in existence today in a semi-derelict state. The building is being partially utilised by 'Abishott Mouldings' and would appear to have good potential for surviving original features.

{2}Originally, a plain 3-storey factory, consisting of an eight-bay street frontage, gabled east-west and fronting Rushton Road to the north, and a seven bay rear range. Between 1899 and 1923 a large single-storey lantern-roofed range was built on the south side of the site. An elevator shaft was inserted at the junction of the front and rear ranges, probably in the inter war period or later. Substantial additions to the east of the front range probably date from c.1960.
