Full Description

{1} Waterworks: Reservoir
Rothwell Urban District Council Waterworks were established in 1902 at a cost of ,10,000. The reservoir for the waterworks is shown on the third edition Ordnance Survey map. Kelly's Trade Directory for 1924 {3} note 'The Pumping station has engines and pumps capable of lifting 24,000 gallons of water per hour to height of 175 foot to service a reservoir holding 200,000 gallons.'
There is still a waterworks / reservoir in the same position as that marked on the 3rd edition map {2} - a new water tower has been erected and the area appears to have substantially remodelled in the late 20th century. Access to the site was not possible, but it would appear that little is likely to survive of the early 20th century development.
