Full Description

{1} Smiths Brewhouse, Black Pot Lane / North Street
Brewhouse built in 1775 and remained in operation until 1962. The building was demolished in 1967. Smith breweries came to own the majority of alehouses in Oundle. During 19th century John Smith purchased the Rectory together with the title of the Lord of the Rectory Manor. Three Tuns was the first public house he bought and his trade mark became the three tuns and John Smith's initals. Carved stone with trade mark on the brewery in North Street - when it was demolished the carved stone was kept and put on the Tabret Room in the rear of the courtyard near the Talbot.

The area of the brewery has now been built over by modern houses, but two of the stone buildings fronting on to the brewery (along North Street) remain in existence. Were these related to the brewery operations or just linked to former layout. Film 3, photo 3.
