Full Description

{1} Boot and shoe factory, Mill Road /Thomas Street
Boot and shoe factory on the corner of Mill Road and Thomas Street with datestone of 1896. Very functional building, but with large oriel window on first floor and elaborate door way in one bay of the building (presumably managers offices). The building survives in its original form with original windows etc, but has in the past been utilised by a number of small industrial firms, it is currently standing derelict, but has been sold.

{2} A dated keystone on the south front suggests that it dates from 1890 whilst documentary evidence places its construction in 1896. The datestone could represent the founding of the company rather than the construction of the building. Between 1899 and 1916 the factory was considerably extended to the east. The eastern bay has a timber oriel window, cantilevered at first floor level, indicating the position of an office.
