Building record 3884/0/206 - Zacchias Forscutt shoe factory, Arthur Street

This former boot and shoe factory occupies a corner site on the west side of Arthur Street and the north side of Northampton Road. It was built between 1896 and 1899 for Zacchias Forscutt who had previously occupied a series of smaller premises.

Boot and shoe factory on Arthur Street still in existence. Two phases of development with distinctive change in brick colour etc although architectural motifs are continued. Cut away corner frontage onto Northampton Road. Sign on door 'Z Forsutt and Sons wholesale and export boot and shoe manufacturers Est 1860'. The building is now owned by 'County Architectural Ironmongery Ltd', but does not appear to be in full usage. (Film 18 photo 12,14,26).

{2} This former boot and shoe factory was built between 1896 and 1899 for Zacchias Forscutt, who continued on the premises for fifty years, despite a serious fire in the 1940s. Subsequently the factory was occupied by several shoe firms and is now used by an architectural fittings firm. The 3 storey factory was built in 2 main phases: the original block corresponded to the 5 northern bays of the current building, and was extended southwards before 1924. A further addition was made shortly after 1924.
