Full Description

{1} Boot and Shoe Factory, Harrowden Road / Gold Street
Boot and Shoe factory fronting onto Green. The building is still in use by 'K.B. Virani and Sons Harboworks' and appears to remain intact. Early 20th century design? Film 21 photo 16,17,19,20.

{2} This boot and shoe factory, consisting of two storeys over a basement, was probably built around 1880, at the same time as the adjoining owner's house, 1 Harrowden Road. The 1885 map shows a shorter rear range than at present, divided into roughly one-quarter and three-quarters. The division suggests that originally only the bay adjacenet to the street range was two-storeyed. The remaining portion was either raised or rebuilt (probably the latter) when the range was extended northwards between 1885 and 1899.
