Building record 3884/0/160 - Workshop at rear of 23 Ranelagh Road

This brick-built two-storey former boot and shoe workshop is now in the garden of 23 Ranelagh Road. It was built in the 1870s as a seperate premises with its own entrance on Winstanley Road.

{1} Industrial building, Newcomen Road

{2} This two-storey former workshop is now a garage. As Ranelagh Road was laid out in 1870 it was probably built around this date. Both the 1885 and 1899 OS surveys show the workshop occupying a separate walled-off plot within the house plot, with its own entrance. The division appears to continue on both the 1924 and 1965 surveys with the 1965 map identifying the building as a 'footwear factory'. The fist floor west facing elevation contains 2 large timber window frames, obviously intended to light a workshop.
