Full Description

{1} 'Barton Seagrave to Westwood Gate Turnpike' (the A6). Rushden was geographically well placed in the 18th and early 19th centuries as it was centrally located on the arterial routes between London and the north of England and were thus able to take advantage of the coaches and waggons passing through the settlement. Rushden lay on the 'Barton Seagrave to Westwood Gate Turnpike' (the A6) which was controlled by the Turnpike Act of 1747. The roads were maintained by tolls, and a toll house and gate were located at High Street/Church Lane.
