Full Description

{1} Red brick building with a slate roof and a square-section chimney, lettered vertically GJCC in lighter coloured brick. Built in 1896 to house steam driven centrifugal pumps, this replaced the earlier engine house of c.1805 for beam engines, situated at some distance to the south. The pumps took water from below the bottom lock up to the summit level of the canal the other side of Braunston tunnel. The steam engine was replaced by a diesel engine in 1940 and electric pumps replaced this in 1958.
