Type and Period (1)

Full Description

{1} 3-storey stone built watermill and adjoining mill house. Dated "ABM 1866". The mill straddles the River Nene and had an internal wheel and later a turbine.

{2} Unable to gain access. On a previous visit, an old two storey brown stone building with Welsh slated ridged roof was said to be the old water mill. At the earlier visit a water turbine was installed in the former wheel-pit and was attached to an electric generator, supposedly for emergency power. Of little significance due to alterations.

{3}{4}{5} The present corn mill was built in 1784 after the previous mill was washed away by floods. It is two storeys high, of Northampton sand ironstone and had an internal waterwheel. In the 1930s the mill was enlarged with new buildings using electrical power and the waterwheel was replaced by a turbine. The old watermill is now completely surrounded by the milling complex of Heygate and Sons Ltd, which started to develop in the 1940s.
