Summary

Kettering's second purpose built cinema, the first being the Gaumont Pavilion in the High Street, demolished in 1960. The Empire opened in May 1920 with a seating capacity of 400, including a small double balcony, popular with courting couples due to the provision of double seats. The Empire was operated throughout its existence by local people and closed in 1954. Its stuccoed central arch and two flanking bayed shell is currently in use as a tyre depot
