Summary

The remains of a ruined World War Two pillbox at the north boundary of Hinton-in-the-Hedges Airfield 400 metres west of Hinton Grounds Farm. The pillbox was of a cantilevered type, probably built between 1940 and 1941. The walls of the pillbox have been demolished leaving only the earth and grass covered reinforced concrete roof supported by a brick pillar.

Full Description

{1} F.C Construction 'mushroom' pillbox, which is more like a mushroom than usual, having had its outer wall demolished, leaving only the concrete roof on its cross shaped brick pillar. Earth cover and grass camoflage remains on most of the roof surface.

{2} The Defence of Britain Database notes the remains of a World War Two cantilevered "mushroom shaped" pillbox at RAF Hinton-in-the-Hedges", Hinton-in-the-Hedges (sic, please see comment on source 2 below), Northamptonshire, SP 545 377. It is reported to be situated at the north boundary of Hinton-in-the-Hedges Airfield 400 metres west of Hinton Grounds Farm. The pillbox was of a cantilevered type, of "FC construction" (presumably ferro concrete is meant). The record states that it was built "in the period" 1940-1941. The walls of the pillbox have been demolished leaving only the earth and grass covered concrete roof supported by a brick pillar.

{3} The position of SP 545 377, 400 metres west of Hinton Grounds Farm lies within the civil parish of Farthinghoe, not Hinton-in-the-Hedges.
