Monument record 7658/0/1 - East Carlton Searchlight Battery, west of Wire Lane

World War II type 22 pillbox on top of a ploughed hill. Concrete moulded embrasures. Just W of Wire Lane Spinney, East Carlton. Interpreted as a defended searchlight site.

{1} Documentary reference to Searchlight battery. Appendix of War Diary details location of every S/L in their area (N of Grantham to E coast) due to a change in the system of numbering in 1942. Prefixes of old numbers make it possible to cross ref them to location statements. East Carlton old number WT.098A (ie 362 Bty, 41 S/L Regt.); new number 268A.

{2} A Armishaw confirms that this is a type 22 hexagonal pillbox with brick walls. Outer bricks all fallen away leaving roof supported by a very thin wall. Located in cropped field. In January 2001 AA notes that photos by M Osborne confirm that this pillbox is identical to that at Pipewell. Interpreted as a defended searchlight site.
