Full Description
{1} Located at the south end of garden type plot adjoining private garden. Small domestic air-raid shelter, partially sunken and earth embanked. Concrete with small amount of brick; pre-cast concrete sections utilised except for entrance and escape hatch which are shuttered concrete. External dimensions of structure 86 by 72 inches. Comprises single cell with escape hatch projecting through centre of 4 inch thick concrete flat roof; single stepped entrance (5 steps) to NW. Entry from base of steps to shelter is narrow (14.5 inch); no door or fittings observed. Traces of white paint/wash on interior walls. No interior fittings observed. Heavy metal cover over escape hatch not in situ; was hinged at one side; 6 small elongated holes formerly with interior cover now missing. May be original hatch cover but if so there must have been a hatch mounting surround, now missing.
Interior of shelter is flooded with wooden and other debris. Apart from this it appears in good condition. Earth embankment in place except along SW side. Exterior photographed. Dimensions taken. Conclusion: small domestic WWII shelter presumably built for one of adjoining houses. Photos.
