Full Description

{1} Two small discrete areas of magnetic enhancement, possibly archaeological in origin, were identified in the south westerns part of the survey area. A very weak linear anomaly was in the south of the survey area. This could not be interpreted with any degree of certainty though an archaeological origin could not be discounted.
A pit was partially uncovered in trench 4, close to the location of the feature identified by geophysics; it contained no finds. A cobbled surface was found within Trench 5: it consisted of a single, densely packed layer of cobbles, interspersed with occasional pieces of ironstone. A less dense scatter of cobbles immediately to the north east suggests that the surface may have originally been more extensive. Post medieval pottery was recovered; many sherds came from between the stones and were probably tramples in during the use of the path.

{2} South of the trackway magnetic and resistive anomalies have been identified that do not relate to any noted earthworks. However, it is not thought that these anomalies are due to quarrying but are probably associated with the earthworks that are present both within the survey area and in the remainder of the field to the west of the application area.

{4} Geophysical survey by CLASP appeared to suggest that this feature continued to the north-west before turning to the north-east. It was interpreted as another trackway;
