Full Description

{2} Enclosed with Lower Boddington in 1758, with the allotments described in the Award of 1759. An 1868 copy of a draft enclosure map of c. 1759 shows both the furlongs of the open fields and the new enclosures of Upper Boddington township only. A core of old enclosure around the settlement is marked.

{3} The plan of Upper Boddington consists of two separate elements lying to the west of an undoubtedly ancient trackway known as the Welsh Road. The south part is a simple north-south street with the church and manor house at its southern, higher end. To the north is a more complex arrangement of streets and lanes arranged in an irregular grid. A possible interpretation of this plan is that the north-south street was the earlier and that the north part grew up, or was deliberately added, at a later date. The surviving earthworks go some way to supporting this idea.

{4} The northern part of the village may be a later, planned addition to the linear developmnent in the south. The relative absence of late medieval material and features suggests that the village could have contracted leaving the application area once again on the periphery of the settlement, although a number of cobbled surfaces were laid down during the post-medieval period.
