Summary

A World War Two pillbox at Polebrook Airfield. The pillbox is situated in the north-west of the airfield, on a bridle path opposite Lutton Road Cottages. The pillbox is a variant of unusual design with a double set of gun slots on one side. It is built of reinforced concrete and brick. Near the pillbox is a demolished latrine suggsting that this was part of an accommodation site for World War Two airfield personnel. The pillbox may have been built between 1940-1941.

Full Description

{2} Probably that previously reported by M Osborne at TL 091872.

{3} Hexagonal. Brick and concrete. Good condition though partly overgrown. Two loops one above the other in two faces. Not present on Record Site Plan.

{5} A World War Two pillbox (variant) at Polebrook Airfield, Polebrook, Northamptonshire, TL 0894 8718, noted on the Defence of Britain Database. The pillbox is situated in the north-west of the airfield, on a bridle path opposite Lutton Road Cottages. The pillbox is of unusual design with a double set of gun slots on one side. It is built of reinforced concrete and brick. Near the pillbox is a demolished latrine suggsting that this was part of an accommodation site for World War Two airfield personnel. The pillbox may have been built between 1940-1941. The pillbox was in fair condition when visited in 1997.
